Dakin Matthews is the Artistic Director of the Andak Stage Company, former Artistic Director of California Actors Theatre, Berkeley Shakespeare Festival, and the Antaeus Company, a founding member of John Houseman's Acting Company, an Associate Artist of the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, and an Emeritus Professor of English from Cal State, East Bay. As an actor he has performed in most of California's major theatres, and won multiple acting awards for his work in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego. Over the last three years, while working as a Shakespearean dramaturge on both coasts (Drama Desk Award for Henry IV) and maintaining a busy film and TV career, he has appeared in plays by Shakespeare (Bayfield Award), Molière, Alarcón, Shaw (OC Weekly Award), Williams, Chekhov, and David Hare, in addition to playing Alfred Hitchcock in Terry Johnson's Hitchcock Blonde, the Fixer in Richard Montoya's Water & Power with Culture Clash (Ovation Award), and in two of his own plays, The Prince of L.A. and A Magic Christmas. Over a career of forty years, he has performed in more than 200 productions, specializing in Shakespearean roles, including Falstaff, Brutus, Bottom, Richard III, Dogberry, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, and many others. He is a member of both the motion picture and television academies, having appeared in over twenty feature films and 200 television episodes. He is also a director, award-winning translator, and Shakespeare scholar.
